East Flanders

 

(Oost-Vlaanderen), a Belgian province, located in the basin of the Schelde River and its tributary the Lys. The province has an area of 3,000 sq km and a population of 1,323,500 (1975). The capital is Ghent. East Flanders is primarily industrial; Ghent, Aalst, Sint-Niklaas, and Ronse are the main centers of the textile, chemical, and machine-building industries. The intensive raising of livestock for meat and dairy products, the cultivation of grain, and suburban market farming are also practiced.
