Eastbourne (ēst`bôrn), city (1991 pop. 86,715) and district, East Sussex, SE England. Eastbourne is a popular resort and conference center with a 3-mi (4.8-km) terraced promenade along the sea front. Industries include glass, soap, brewing, and boatbuilding. Educational institutions include the College of Further Education and teacher-training and physical-education colleges for women. Compton Place (1726–27), seat of the Dukes of Devonshire until 1954, was turned into a school. Eastbourne a resort in SE England, in East Sussex on the English Channel.
