Ecological tourism was introduced in the 1980s, and in 2002 the United Nations launched the International Year of Ecotourism. The agency is a pioneer in ecological tourism on the Galapagos Islands, the country's main tourism draw. UNEP is working with TIES, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and Ecological Tourism in Europe (ETE) on a full program of activities. |
