In the southwestern TX panhandle, west of Midland; organized Feb 26, 1887 from Tom Green County. Name Origin: For Gen. Matthew Duncan Ector (1822-79), TX legislator and jurist.

Area (sq mi): 901.68 (land 901.06; water 0.62). Pop per sq mi: 139.10.
Pop 2005: 125,339. State rank: 27. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.50%; 1990-2000 1.80%. Pop 2000: 121,123 (White 51.30%; Black or African American 4.60%; Hispanic or Latino 42.40%; Asian 0.60%; Other 21.00%). Foreign born: 10.60%. Median age: 32.00.
Income 2000: per capita $15,031; median household $31,152; Pop below poverty level: 18.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,093-$22,665.
