Eddy, Nelson (1901–67) baritone; born in Providence, R.I. After working at various jobs, he won a contest to sing with the Philadelphia Civic Opera. A concert tour and radio appearances in the early 1930s led to a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Inc. and he proceeded to make a series of operetta-like films with Jeanette MacDonald, including Naughty Marietta (1935) and Rose Marie (1936); extremely popular at the time, the movies gained them the billing, "America's Sweethearts." After their last movie, I Married an Angel (1942), his career faltered, although he continued to tour and sing; he died after collapsing while on stage in Australia.
