On the southern border of NM, east of Las Cruces; organized Feb 25, 1889 from Lincoln County (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Charles B. Eddy, rancher, promoter of the Carlsbad Irrigation Project, and railroad builder.

Area (sq mi): 4197.57 (land 4182.02; water 15.55). Pop per sq mi: 12.30.
Pop 2005: 51,437. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.40%; 1990-2000 6.30%. Pop 2000: 51,658 (White 57.70%; Black or African American 1.60%; Hispanic or Latino 38.80%; Asian 0.40%; Other 21.70%). Foreign born: 5.30%. Median age: 36.40.
