Edel, (Joseph) Leon (1907– ) biographer; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He taught at New York University (1953–73), devoting his scholarly career to Henry James. Edel wrote a magisterial 5-volume biography of James (1953–85) and published numerous editions of his letters and other writings.
