Edge, Walter Evans (1873–1956) governor, U.S. senator, ambassador; born in Philadelphia, Pa. A self-made advertising millionaire, he served in the New Jersey senate (Rep., 1911–16); as New Jersey's governor (1917–20), he reformed prison administration. In the U.S. Senate (1920–29), he supported founding the bureau of the budget; he left to become ambassador to France (1929–33). Governor of New Jersey again (1944–47), he fought for state constitutional reforms. |
