On the central western border of SC, north of Augusta, GA; established Mar 12, 1785 from Ninety Six District. Name Origin: Said to be so named because the old district of Edgefield was bordered by the Savannah River and by Indian lands, and thus was the edge of SC.

Area (sq mi): 506.54 (land 501.89; water 4.64). Pop per sq mi: 50.90.
Pop 2005: 25,528. State rank: 36. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.80%; 1990-2000 33.90%. Pop 2000: 24,595 (White 55.50%; Black or African American 41.50%; Hispanic or Latino 2.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 35.60.
Income 2000: per capita $15,415; median household $35,146; Pop below poverty level: 15.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,921-$20,345.
Unemployment 2004: 6.00%. Change from 2000: 1.20%. Median travel time to work: 27.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 58.30%.
