Edwin, James (1797–1861) explorer, naturalist; born in Addison County, Vt. The botanist, geologist, and surgeon for Major Stephen Long's expedition of exploration (1820) he was one of the first three white men to climb Pike's Peak (1820). He compiled several Amerindian spelling books and translated the New Testament into the Ojibwa language (1833). An ardent abolitionist, he ran a station of the Underground Railroad in Iowa.
