Dorosh, Efim Iakovlevich

Born Dec. 12 (25), 1908, in Elizavetgrad, present-day Kirovograd; died Aug. 20, 1972, in Moscow. Soviet Russian Writer. Member of the CPSU from 1945. Educated as an artist.

Dorosh began publishing his work in 1930. His prewar stories deal mainly with the theme of the Civil War. In the late 1950’s rural themes began to predominate in his works. In 1954 he began his Rural Diary (1956-70), in which he artistically examines one region year after year, exposes the contradictions in rural life, depicts the masters and builders of the new socialist life (such as Ivan Fedoseevich), condemns the routine approach in agricultural management, and fervently supports popular initiative. He also writes on artistic themes and themes from ancient Russian culture, for example, The Rostov Kremlin (1967), “Meditations in Zagorsk” (1967), and “Images of Russia” (1969). Dorosh was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
