Egiazarian, Grigorii Ilich

Egiazarian, Grigorii Il’ich 

(also Grigorii Egiazarovich Egiazarian). Born Dec. 8 (21), 1908, in the village of Blur, Surmalin District (now part of Turkey). Soviet composer. People’s Artist of the USSR (1977). Member of the CPSU since 1950.

In 1935, Egiazarian graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where he had studied composition under N. Ia. Miaskovskii. In 1938 he began teaching composition at the Yerevan Conservatory, where he became a professor in 1959 and director in 1954. He wrote the ballets Sevan (1956), Dream Lake (1967), and Ara the Fair and Semiramis (1972). Other compositions include the symphony Razdan (I960), the symphonic poem Armenia (1942), a violin concerto (1943), choruses, and art songs.

Egiazarian received the State Prize of the Armenian SSR in 1970 and has been awarded two orders and various medals.
