Egorov, Iurii Pavlovich 

Born May 25, 1920, in Sochi. Soviet motion picture director; Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR (1965).

In 1950, Egorov graduated from the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (S. A. Gerasimov’s studio). He collaborated with G. S. Pobedonostsev in writing the play Three Soldiers and staged it at the Film Actors’ Theater-Studio. In 1954 he and Pobedonostsev produced the film Incident in the Taiga, and in 1955 he made The Frozen Sea. Egorov has directed and written the screenplays for a number of films dealing with Soviet young people:The Volunteers (1958, based on the narrative poem by E. Dolmatovskii), A Business Trip (1962), //You’re Right (1964), and Not the Luckiest of Days (1967). The director’s most important films are They Were the First (1956) and A Simple Story (1960). From 1964 to 1970 he headed the central board for feature film production of the Committee on Cinematography of the Council of Ministers of the USSR. In 1972, Egorov collaborated with a Swedish film company in producing A Man From the Other Side. Since 1962, he has been teaching at the Ail-Union State Institute of Cinematography.
