Abasov, Eiiub Dzhebrail Ogly 

Born 1905 in Shaki; died Dec. 18, 1957, in Baku. Soviet Azerbaijan writer. Honored Worker in the Arts of the Azerbaijan SSR in 1954. Member of the CPSU from 1969.

Abasov was born into a peasant family and first worked as a farm hand. He was graduated from the Baku Pedagogical Institute in 1932 and began to publish that year, while working for newspapers. He is the author of the poems Ship Under the Red Flag (1953), dedicated to Soviet aid to India, and A Word About Truth (1953), which describes the heroism of Brazilian social activist Elisa Branco. His novel Zangezur (vols. 1 and 2, 1956–57, translated into Russian in 1959) depicts the struggle of the Azerbaijan and Armenian peoples for Soviet power. He also wrote poetry and plays for children and translated S. Ia. Marshak and Iu. Tuvim into Azerbaijan.
