Einstein's summation convention [′īn‚stīnz sə′mā·shən kən‚ven·chən] (mathematics) A notational convenience used in tensor analysis whereupon it is agreed that any term in which an index appears twice will stand for the sum of all such terms as the index assumes all of a preassigned range of values.
