Ekman layer [′ek·mən ‚lā·ər]
(meteorology)
The layer of transition between the surface boundary layer of the atmosphere, where the shearing stress is constant, and the free atmosphere, which is treated as an ideal fluid in approximate geostrophic equilibrium. Also known as spiral layer.
