El Bajio

El Bajío 

a basin in Mexico, on the southern Mexican plateau, in the basin of the Río Turbio, a right tributary of the Rio Lerma. The predominant altitude is 1,000–2,000 m. The climate is mild mountain-tropical. The average temperature is about 12° C in December and about 18° C in May. Precipitation is about 550 mm a year. October to May is the dry season. The soil is fertile, so that El Bajío is a main agricultural region of central Mexico. Wheat, corn, and vegetables are grown. The main city is León.

In the 1990s, TransCanada built the 435-mile Mayakan Pipeline and the 133-mile El Bajio pipelines.
Some two hundred years later at the height of its popularity, the instrument had become an essential component of the traditional music orchestras that performed at ballrooms, private parties, and public concerts, especially in Mexico City and the fertile heartland to the north and west known as El Bajio.
Large international companies are exploiting the fertile lands and human resources of El Bajio to grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables for export (Palerm & Urquiola 1993).
