Along it, Spanish and Mexican influences moved northeastward. As the Old San Antonio Road, after Mexican independence in 1821, this route brought American immigrants south and west into what became the Texas Republic, the anexation of which precipitated the Mexican-American War of the late 1840's. The comprehensive management plan for developing this trail is just getting underway.
