In NE CA, E of Sacramento; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: From Spanish 'the gilded' or 'the golden,' originally applied to a legendary chief and city sought by the early Spanish explorers; here the name refers to gold discovered in the area in 1848.

Area (sq mi): 1788.10 (land 1710.85; water 77.25). Pop per sq mi: 103.40.
Pop 2005: 176,841. State rank: 30. Pop change: 2000-20005 13.10%; 1990-2000 24.10%. Pop 2000: 156,299 (White 84.90%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 9.30%; Asian 2.10%; Other 7.60%). Foreign born: 7.20%. Median age: 39.40.
Income 2000: per capita $25,560; median household $51,484; Pop below poverty level: 7.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $35,597-$36,373.
