In central CO, south of Denver; original county, organized Nov 1, 1861 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: Spanish 'the pass' [through the mountains], referring to Ute Pass, west of Colorado Springs.

Area (sq mi): 2129.56 (land 2126.45; water 3.11). Pop per sq mi: 266.00.
Pop 2005: 565,582. State rank: 1. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.40%; 1990-2000 30.20%. Pop 2000: 516,929 (White 76.20%; Black or African American 6.50%; Hispanic or Latino 11.30%; Asian 2.50%; Other 9.70%). Foreign born: 6.40%. Median age: 33.00.

    On the northwestern border of TX, north of Cuidad Juarez, Mexico; organized Jan 3, 1850 from Bexar County. Name Origin: For the city, itself from Spanish for 'the ford,' for a major crossing of the Rio Grande River, or 'the pass' for El Paso del Norte 'the north pass' through either the Sierra Madre or the Franklin mountains: the city lies in a valley between them.
