Elbasan (ĕlbäsän`) or Elbasani (ĕlbäsä`nē), town (1989 pop. 80,650), capital of Elbasan dist., central Albania, on the Shkumbin River. The city is also a commercial center producing steel, chrome, cement, timber products and soap. Coal and iron ore are mined nearby. Much of the agricultural land nearby has been severely contaminated by pollution from local industries. Elbasan is linked by railroad with the port of Durrës. Known as Scampa in ancient times, it is sometimes identified with Albanopolis, the ancient capital (c.A.D. 130) of the Albanians. How to thank TFD for its existence? This effort was assisted in 1999 by the initiation of a United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) "Weapons in Exchange for Development" program (originally targeted at the Albanian district of Gramsh, later extended to Elbasan and Dirba). When Seament Albania's factory in Elbasan was forced to close for eight months during the anarchy of 1977, the management decided to keep faith with the workforce by continuing to pay their salaries, even though there was no production. Nowhere was this coalescence between the Socialists (and their allies) and the rebels more graphically displayed than in the small town of Cerrik, not far from the monumental "Steel of the Party" metallurgical complex at Elbasan. |
