Elbeuf (ĕlböf`), town (1990 pop. 16,750), Seine-Maritime dept., NW France, in Normandy, on the Seine River. It is the center of an industrial complex and is a river port. The town has been famous as a woolen center since the 16th cent. but was heavily industrialized after World War II. Automobile parts, electrical equipment, and chemicals are among the manufactures. Elbeuf's history dates back to Roman times. The town has numerous churches dating from the 15th to the 17th cent. |
