arc lamp [′ärk ‚lamp]
(electricity)
An electric lamp in which the light is produced by an arc made when current flows through ionized gas between two electrodes. Also known as electric-arc lamp.

It all began back in 1879, with just EIGHT electric arc lamps when holiday makers tripped the lights fantastic to view what was called artificial sunshine.
By 1878 the house was using a turbine-powered electric arc lamp and in 1880 it had the incandescent carbon filament light invented by Armstrong's friend Joseph Swan, from Gateshead.
Brush, whose historic developments of the electric arc lamp, the electro-dynamo and storage battery, and power transmission significantly advanced the practical use of electricity.
