electromagnetic fieldProperty of space caused by the motion of an electric charge. A stationary charge produces an electric field in the surrounding space. If the charge is moving, a magnetic field is also produced. A changing magnetic field also produces an electric field. The interaction of electric and magnetic fields produces an electromagnetic field, which has its own existence in space apart from the charges involved. An electromagnetic field can sometimes be described as a wave that transports electromagnetic radiation. electromagnetic field [i¦lek·trō·mag′ned·ik ′fēld] (electromagnetism) An electric or magnetic field, or a combination of the two, as in an electromagnetic wave. Electromagnetic field A changing magnetic field always produces an electric field, and conversely, a changing electric field always produces a magnetic field. This interaction of electric and magnetic forces gives rise to a condition in space known as an electromagnetic field. The characteristics of an electromagnetic field are expressed mathematically by Maxwell's equation. AROUND THE BEND In two other independently derived but similar invisibility techniques, researchers propose using a shell of metamaterials to distort the ordinarily straight paths along which electromagnetic fields extend through space. The relationship between exposure to electromagnetic fields and human health has been put into sharper focus because of the rapidly expanding use of electromagnetic fields in modem society. 2003) found an association between exposure to electromagnetic fields and stomach and pancreatic cancer; Villeneuve et al. |
