Edgar or Eadgar (both: ĕd`gər), 943?–975, king of the English (959–75), son of Edmund, king of Wessex. In 957 the Mercians and Northumbrians rebelled against Edgar's brother Edwy Edwy or Eadwig , d. 959, king of the English (955–57) and king of Wessex (955–59), son of Edmund. He succeeded his uncle, Edred as king of the English, but in 957, Mercia and Northumbria shifted their allegiance to his brother Edgar.

He recalled (958) Saint Dunstan Dunstan, Saint , c.910–88, English monk, archbishop of Canterbury (960–88), b. near Glastonbury.
