Asked to develop the theme of unlocking potential at a Policy Network seminar last week, the prime minister preferred to quote the 18th century poet Thomas Gray and his Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard, with its mournful reflections on the waste of talent of those too poor to fulfil their ambitions.
I live on the fourth floor of a Marylebone mansion and during the weekend our lift, which had given sterling if rickety service for many years, decided to call it a day: performed its final journey, stopped on the ground floor, partially opening its gate to enable its passenger - the plump lady from the basement - to squeeze out, and left the world to darkness, as Gray put it in his Elegy Written In A Country Churchyard.
In his article for the Observer last Sunday, Brown quoted the 18th-century poet Thomas Gray, whose Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard gazes at the tombstones of those whose lives were thwarted, wondering if deep in the ground lies buried a "mute inglorious Milton".
