| With subsequent British Sovereigns taking over the role (as the Medal still requires royal approval), many more familiar names have also received the honour: Edwin Lutyens in 1921, Giles Gilbert Scott in 1925, Frank Lloyd Wright in 1942, Eliel Saarinen in 1950, Le Corbusier in 1953, and Mies van der Rohe in 1959. Modigliani, who was influenced by ancient art, takes in the world, ``digests it all and out come things that look like Modigliani's,'' says Carol Eliel, curator of contemporary art at LACMA. In 16-by-20-inch color photographs of the undersides of overturned classic Modernist chairs (by Charles Eames and Eliel Saarinen, among others), he captured what may be seen as the aftermath. |
