Elisabeth (Queen) International Music Competition May One of the world's most prestigious music competitions and the largest musical event in Brussels takes place throughout the month of May each year. Open to young competitors from around the world, the competition focuses on violinists one year, composers the next, pianists the third year, and singers the fourth year. It is timed to coincide with the birthday of Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, who supported and encouraged violinist-composer EugÅne Ysa+e when he started the event in 1937. Although billed as a competition, the public is invited to attend every stage of the contest, from the initial tests at the Royal Conservatory of Music to the winner's performance with full orchestra at the Beaux Arts Palace. Members of the jury, many of whom are past winners of the competition, also perform for the public one evening during the month-long competition, and a distinguished musician is invited to give the opening concert.
