Eliseev, Aleksandr Vasil’evich
Born Aug. 1 (13), 1859, in Sveaborg, present-day Suomenlinna, Finland; died May 22 (June 3), 1895, in St. Petersburg. Russian traveler. Eliseev graduated from the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg in 1882. He traveled in northern and north-western European Russia and in Sweden, Norway, and Finland. He is known mainly as an explorer of Asia Minor and Africa. In 1881–82 he visited Egypt, Palestine, and Syria and from 1884 to 1887 traveled in Libya, Algeria, Tunisia, and Asia Minor. In 1893 he made a trip into the Libyan Desert, intending to visit the area of the Sudan where the Mahdi rebellion was taking place; however, he was unsuccessful. In 1895 he traveled throughout Ethiopia. Eliseev collected an enormous wealth of anthropological and ethnological data during his journeys.
