Elizabethton, city (1990 pop. 11,931), seat of Carter co., NE Tenn., on the Watauga River; inc. 1799. It is an industrial center where rayon, clothing, boxes, crushed stone, and hand tools are produced. Tobacco, fruit, and Christmas trees are grown. The region was one of the earliest settled in Tennessee. In 1772 the Watauga Association Watauga Association, government (1772–75) formed by settlers along the Watauga River in present E Tennessee.
