In southeastern KS, southeast of Wichita; organized Mar 3, 1875 from Howard County, which was organized in 1855 (named Godfrey and changed to Seward in 1867) and abolished at the time of its division into Chautauqua and Elk counties. Name Origin: For the large North American deer, the elk or wapiti.

Area (sq mi): 650.36 (land 647.29; water 3.07). Pop per sq mi: 4.80.
Pop 2005: 3,075. State rank: 87. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.70%; 1990-2000 -2.00%. Pop 2000: 3,261 (White 94.50%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 0.20%; Other 4.60%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 46.00.

    Elk County will develop a treatment team that enhances collaboration between the mental health and criminal justice systems.
    Phase II facilities will be designed to provide additional transportation capacity for at least 300,000 dth/d, and will consist of approximately 50 miles of new pipeline and compression, extending the Phase I facilities through Clearfield and Jefferson Counties, Pennsylvania, to Supply Corporation's Line K in western Elk County, for an anticipated in-service date of November 2012.
    The increase in noninterest income was primarily due to a gain on the sale of the former Elk County Savings and Loan Association (ECSLA) building, which the Bank acquired as a result of the merger with ECSLA during 2008.
