Elk Rock State Park

Location: 7 miles north of Knoxville, off IA 14.
Facilities: 21 campsites (12 with electrical hookups) with modern shower building, 60 equestrian campsites (24 with electrical hookups) with modern shower building, horse stalls, hitching rails, and riding arena, picnic area (1 mile north of the main park) with open picnic shelter, playground, multi-use trails (13 miles), 2 boat ramps.
Activities: Camping, swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking.
Special Features: Park is located on 19,000-acre Lake Red Rock, one of Iowa's largest impoundments. The lake is a major "rest stop" for waterfowl and other migratory bird species (including white pelicans and bald eagles) during fall and spring migrations.

The sights along the river included the Portland Skyline, numerous bridges, the Ross Island eagle habitat, Dunthorpe homes; a prestigious area of country estates and manors, Elk Rock, created by lava flows, and islands surrounding Elk Rock.
MILE 37: Elk Rock viewpoint, where the Monument begins and nature is recovering at her own pace, provides the best view of the Toutle River avalanche and mud flow, and, far below, the scattered "bones" of the blown-down forest.
