Ellesmere

an island in the northeastern part of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Ellesmere Island has an area of about 250,–000 sq km and rises to an elevation of 2,604 m. Numerous fjords divide the island into distinct areas, or lands: Grant Land, Grinnell Land, Sverdrup Land, and Ellesmere Land. About one-third of the island is covered by glaciers. Arctic-wasteland and tundra vegetation prevails.
