Ellis, Albert (1913– ) psychologist, author; born in Pittsburgh, Pa. He studied at Columbia University (Ph.D. 1947), taught at Rutgers University (1948–49), and practiced clinical psychology from 1950. He published many books on psychology and sexual behavior, and is best known as the developer of Rational-Emotive Psychotherapy, which rejects Freudian theories to assert that emotions come from conscious as well as unconscious sources. His books include Sex Without Guilt (1966).
