Ellis, Harvey (1852–1904) furniture designer; born in Rochester, N.Y. Originally an architect, he worked with Henry H. Richardson on the design of the New York State capitol in Albany. In the 1880s Ellis worked in the Midwest, then returned to Rochester. In 1902 he began to design furniture for Gustav Stickley's United Crafts shop in Syracuse, N.Y.; in 1903 he began to publish brilliant designs for textiles and interiors as well as furniture in The Craftsman. He seems to have been solely responsible for the Stickley workshop's production of ornamental inlaid furniture. How to thank TFD for its existence?
