Ellmann, Richard (1918–87) literary critic, educator; born in Highland Park, Mich. A scholar of 19th- and 20th-century Irish literature who lectured widely and taught at Northwestern (1951–68) and Oxford (1970–84) Universities, he wrote among other works definitive biographies of James Joyce (1959) and Oscar Wilde (1987).
