In central KS, west of Salina; organized Feb 26, 1867 from Saline County. Name Origin: For Lt. Allen Ellsworth, an officer in the Iowa Cavalry, who commanded the fort later named for him.

Area (sq mi): 723.44 (land 715.91; water 7.54). Pop per sq mi: 8.90.
Pop 2005: 6,343. State rank: 58. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.80%; 1990-2000 -0.90%. Pop 2000: 6,525 (White 91.20%; Black or African American 3.60%; Hispanic or Latino 3.60%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.60%). Foreign born: 1.30%. Median age: 41.80.
Income 2000: per capita $16,569; median household $35,772; Pop below poverty level: 7.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,582-$23,730.
Unemployment 2004: 4.20%. Change from 2000: 1.70%. Median travel time to work: 17.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 22.10%.

Forward-looking statements in this news release include that Fox's ten proposed locations located in the Geneseo-Edwards Field located in Ellsworth County, Kansas would produce 50,000 barrels of oil at an estimated monthly production rate of 698 barrels of oil per well; 10,000 barrels per month could be produced from 14 wells; 7,000 barrels per month will be produced from 10 wells; total revenue may not be as high as stated.
The program pertains to three leases totaling 320 acres in the Geneseo-Edwards field located in Ellsworth County, Kansas.
Most of the gas will be processed at Enron Gas Processing Company's Bushton Plant in Ellsworth County, Kansas," said Mike Fitzgibbons, project development director for the acquisition.
