El’ton 

an urban-type settlement in Pallasovka Raion, Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. Situated on Lake El’ton, El’ton has a railroad station on the Moscow-Astrakhan line. Sheep-raising sovkhozes are located near the settlement.


El’ton 

a drainless solar salt lake in the northern Caspian Lowland, in Volgograd Oblast, RSFSR. Lake El’ton has an area of 152 sq km and a depth of about 0.1 m (0.7–0.8 m in spring). The water level is 18 m below sea level. Fed mainly by snow, the lake has salt springs on its bottom. It contains brine, whose salinity decreases in spring. There are deposits of salts (mainly NaCl and KC1) and hydrogen sulfide mud on the bottom.

A peloid and balneological health resort is located near Lake El’ton, 6 km from the El’ton railroad station. Summers are warm, with an average July temperature of 25°C, and winters are moderately cold, with an average January temperature of – 11°C. Precipitation totals about 300 mm annually. Therapeutic remedies include silt and brine from the lake and water from the Smoragda chloride-sulfate sodium spring, which is used for drinking. Treatment is available for women’s diseases and for disorders of the peripheral nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and the digestive system. The resort has a sanatorium and a pelotherapy clinic.
