Ely, Eugene (1886–1911) aviator; born in Williamsburg, Iowa. He worked as a chauffeur before learning to fly in California in 1909. The next year, he was the first person to fly to and from a warship. An exhibition pilot, he died while attempting a dip at the state fairgrounds, Macon, Ga.
