Elymus

(wild rye), a genus of perennial turf-forming grasses of the family Gramineae. The inflorescence is a linear spike. There are about 100 species, distributed in almost all nontropical regions and in the mountains of the tropics. Many species are valuable forage plants. The USSR has about 35 species. E. jacutensis occurs in Eastern Siberia and the northern Far East; the plant grows mainly in floodplain meadows. E. schrenkianus grows on rocky slopes in Middle Asia. E. trachycaulus ssp. novae-angliae is raised for forage. Several other valuable forage species are often classified in the genus Leymus. The genus Elymus formerly was part of the genus Roegneria.
