Jhansi (jän`sē), city (1991 pop. 368,564), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India. A road and rail junction, agricultural market, and small industrial center, it has iron and steel mills and railway workshops. The city grew around a fort built in 1613 by the Rajputs Rajputs [Sanskrit,=son of a king], dominant people of Rajputana, an historic region now almost coextensive with the state of Rajasthan, NW India. British residents in Jhansi were massacred during the Indian Mutiny Indian Mutiny, 1857–58, revolt that began with Indian soldiers in the Bengal army of the British East India Company but developed into a widespread uprising against British rule in India. It is also known as the Sepoy Rebellion, sepoys being the native soldiers.

Jhansi 

a city in northern India, in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in the Chambal River valley. Population, 198,100 (1971). Jhansi is a commercial and distribution center and a highway, railroad, and airline junction. The city contains railroad workshops and handicraft industries. There is a memorial museum in the old fort in honor of Rani Lakshmi Bai, a heroine of the anti-English nationalist (Sepoy) uprising of 1857-59.
