Emma Wood State Beach

Location: West of Ventura; family campsites are 2 miles west on US 101 and the group camp is at the west end of Main Street in Ventura.
Facilities: 90 primitive family campsites for self-contained vehicles (no tents permitted), 4 developed group campsites (tent camping and primitive RV camping), picnic areas, hiking trails, bike trails. Group camp facilities include restrooms and water (no hook-ups); primitive campsites have no restrooms or water.
Activities: Camping, fishing, swimming, surfing, hiking, bicycling.
Special Features: The Ventura River Estuary at the southeast end of the beach attracts a variety of wildlife, including raccoons, songbirds, and great blue heron, and dolphins are occasionally seen just offshore. Site also includes the crumbling ruins of a World War II coastal artillery site.

Emma Wood State Beach has moderate ocean temperatures that make it an ideal spot for swimming, surfing and fishing.
The testing standards are rigorous because lives are at stake, said Steve White, lifeguard supervisor for the Ventura area, which includes McGrath State Beach, Ventura State Beach, Emma Wood State Beach and, under contract, the city beach at the Ventura pier.
