On central northern border of IA, northwest of Fort Dodge; established Jan 15, 1851 from Kossuth and Dickinson counties. Name Origin: For Robert W. Emmet (1778-1803), Irish patriot executed by the English for revolutionary acts. Places were named for him during a time when leaders of rebellions were honored by Americans.

Area (sq mi): 402.38 (land 395.74; water 6.63). Pop per sq mi: 26.60.

On the northwest coast of MI, bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established as Tonedagana County Apr 1, 1840 from Mackinac County; name changed Mar 8, 1843. Name Origin: For Robert W. Because of the likelihood of slope failure on and near bluffs with lacustrine clay strata, the Emmet County Planning Commission is recommending that new construction be eliminated from steeply sloping areas, and that existing structures on such slopes not be allowed to expand their footprint.
National Wind Assessments, the wind analysis division of National Wind, has also installed a meteorological (met) tower in Emmet County to collect wind data in the area for a minimum of one year, helping create an accurate picture of the wind resource in the area.
