Emmons, S. F. (Samuel Franklin) (1841–1911) geologist; born in Boston, Mass. He served the U.S. geological exploration of the 40th parallel, then became a geologist for the newly created U.S. Geological Survey (1879–1911). He made major contributions to studies of mining and the origin of ore deposits.
