Emser, Hieronymus (hē'ĕrō`nüm s ĕm`zər), 1477–1527, German Roman Catholic theologian. He was secretary to the elector of Saxony and urged reform of clerical abuse. In 1519 his enmity with Luther began; he and Luther indulged in the most violent invective, mainly on the subject of Luther's translation of the New Testament. Emser published his own translation in 1527.How to thank TFD for its existence?
