Enation

Enation 

a scale that is an outgrowth from the surface of the leaf petioles of certain ferns. The formation of enations is similar to the development of small leaves in certain types of higher plants (for example, club mosses) in the process of evolution. Such leaves were formed as flattened photosynthesizing outgrowths of the stem cortex.
