Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Location: 28 miles north of Fredericksburg on Ranch Road, in the central part of the state.
Facilities: Tent camping, primitive campsites, showers, restrooms, day-use group facility, picnic areas, interpretive center, hiking trails, interpretive center, park store, playground.
Activities: Camping, hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting (with restrictions).
Special Features: The rock is a huge pink granite exfoliation dome that rises 425 feet above ground, 1,825 feet above sea level, and covers 640 acres. It is one of the largest batholiths (an underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States. Tonkawa Indians believed ghost fires flickered at the top, and they heard creaking and groaning coming from the rock, which geologists say resulted from the rock's heating by day and contracting in the cool night.
