Encina, Francisco Antonio
Born Sept. 10, 1874, in Talca; died Aug. 24, 1965, in Santiago. Chilean historian and sociologist; head of the conservative school in Chilean historiography. Encina graduated from the University of Chile in 1897. He believed that the history of Chile was determined not by the people but by great individuals. The historical process, according to Encina, is beyond comprehension, and history is not a science but an art. Encina did not recognize any scientific method in the study of history and rejected the principle of the chronological exposition of events.
