Enei, Evgenii Evgen’evich 

Born June 9, 1890, in Radnot, present-day Ernut, Rumania; died June 6, 1971, in Leningrad. Soviet motion picture set designer; People’s Artist of the USSR (1969). Member of the CPSU from 1920.

Enei, of Hungarian origin, was a student of the department of architecture at the Polytechnical University and at the Academy of Arts in Budapest. He began working in motion pictures in 1923. Enei designed sets for the renowned Soviet films The Youth of Maksim (1935), The Return of Maksim (1937), Don Quixote (1957), and Hamlet (1964). He assisted in the creation of the films The Overcoat and The Rainette de Champagne (both in 1926), S. V. D. (1927), The New Babylon and Fragment of an Empire (both in 1929), The Woman Alone (1931), Pirogov (1947), Academician Ivan Pavlov (1949), The Gadfly (1955), and Katerina hmailova (1967). Enei was awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and a medal. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948.
