Engadine (ĕng`gədēn), Romansh Engiadina (ĕnjädē`nä), valley of the upper Inn River, Grisons canton, E Switzerland, in the Rhaetian Alps. It extends for c.60 mi (100 km) NE from Maloja Pass to the Austrian border and consists of the Upper and the Lower Engadine. The forested and partially cultivated valley is dominated in the south by the Bernina Alps. The population is largely Romansh-speaking and Protestant. Noted for its majestic scenery and excellent climate, the Engadine is a famous tourist and health center. Its many resorts include St. Moritz, Pontresina, Silvaplana, Schuls, and Samaden, chief town of the Upper Engadine. The Swiss National Park (53 sq mi/137 sq km; est. 1909), in the Lower Engadine, is a wildlife sanctuary.
